The 2009 Learn and Ski Seminar
Saas Almagell, Wallis, Switzerland
Date: March 19 to 22, 2009

Dear colleagues,

This is to reminder that there are still some place available for the FICS seminar in Zermatt next January 17 – 24, 2009. The deadline for the Hotel rooms is December 20th, 2008.

The program will be on extremities adjusting, politics of sport, measurements after treatments, philosophy of sport and skiing.

Dr. Brian NOOK

Brian NOOK is vice-president of FICS and Dean of the Chiropractic program in MURDOCH UNIVERSITY in Perth (Australia). Brian graduated from Northwestern College of Chiropractic in 1983 and worked at the school teaching and completing research till 1985.  He then moved to Schaller, Iowa with his wife who had just graduated from University of Minnesota Veterinary School.  They then set up active practices in the area.  Brian practiced in Schaller and the community of Holstein till 1996 when he took leave to teach at the Teknion Natal Department of Chiropractic in Durban, South Africa till 1999.  He then returned to Schaller to continue his practice.  Brian is a Diplomat in Sports Chiropractic and has been team physicians at many local, national, and international sporting events.  He has served at 4 Olympic Games and 3 All African Games.

Throughout Dr. Nook’s career he has had a strong interest in the manipulative skills needed to practice chiropractic.  Not only has the application to the spine but to all joints of the body especially the extremities.  Developing this skill in students is an exciting challenge to Brian.  He looks forward to the awe of the students, the eagerness to learn, their appreciation of the unknown, the mastering of difficult skills, and the realization that the patient and the care they receive is the peak of professionalism.

Mr. Matthias REMUND

Matthias REMUND is the head of the Federal Office of Sport (BASPO/OSFPO) in Magglingen/Macolin. As a chiropractic patient he is supportive of sports chiropractic inside the Swiss sports movement.

He has a degree of layer from the University of Berne..

He was in his career:

  • Secretary of the Swiss Cheese Union
  • Secretary general os the Patfonal Center
  • Member of the management of Swisscom and CEO of Billag

Matthias Remund was a top athlete in cross country skiing. He was active in different promotions, coaching and sports management. Matthias Remund is married and has 6 children. His hobbies are cross-country skiing, jogging, ice-hockey and alpine skiing.
He will discuss the development of sport in Switzerland with the political actions developed by the Federal office of Sport.

Mike MAC NAMEE is a researcher and professor of sport’s philosophy in Swansea University (Wales). Mike McNamee teaches healthcare and medical ethics.

His research interests are in the ethics of medicine and healthcare and the ethics of sports, and research ethics. He is a former President of the International Association for the Philosophy of Sport, and was the founding Chair of the British Philosophy of Sport Association.

He serves/has served on the Executive Committee on many national and international associations including the European College of Sport Science, the International Council for sport Science and Physical Education and the Philosophy of Education Society of Great Britain. He is the founding Editor of Sport, Ethics and Philosophy (http://www.tandf.co.uk/journals/titles/17511321.asp). He has written or edited (singly and in collaboration) 8 books in applied philosophy and ethics in sport and health. His latest book is Sports, Virtues and Vices: morality play (Routledge, 2008).

Mike will talk on some aspect of Sports philosophy based on his research.

This seminar is combining academic program, skiing and social activities. We have been also to get a good package from Hotel Sonne.

Participants and guests will have the possibility to have 2 afternoons of skiing lessons by professional ski instructors.
